I could just have easily named this "Python Developer in the Forging". As a self-taught developer with a non-traditional educational background, learning computer science fundamentals feels a lot like that at times. The forging process is one where a metal object is superheated until it becomes pliable. That metal is then struck or hammered to the point it deforms to the desired shape of the craftsman. Once the shape is achieved, the metal is allowed to cool, where upon doing, it retains the shape post-hammered.
If I'm metal, right now, I'm being superheated and hammered. What's the heat? It's internalized stress from the desire to be more. It's the goal dangling like a far away carrot of an improved financial situation and satisfaction at work. What's the hammer? Assignments and deadlines, peers doing well, and again those internal stresses. Taken all together, this combination will either make or break the self-taught developer. I'm at the point where I've decided I'm going to let it make me. When I started this journey, it was for a reason. That reason still lives.
This developer story is admittedly a tad abstract. What it also is is an assessment by Lawrence Lockhart, Python Developer, of what it's like to grasp data structures and iteration, classes and recursion, and finally be able to put those concepts into code. This is my journey.
